It’s So Big!

At the time of our second Japanese tour, Darren and Jim weren’t with us. So we travelled with a session keyboard player and lead guitarist, whom we shall call K and G. As hardened tourists, Kev, Jon and Mark were reasonably nonchalant about the trip but K and G were extremely excited and K, in […]

Bigger Than Oasis

Anyone who has dipped their toe into the murky waters of the music business will know that often good management is every bit as important as exceptional talent. Whether we have the latter is perhaps not for us to say but the former is unfortunately not something with which we have been overly blessed. Tony […]

Beware The Lone Samosa

Russel Paye was recruited by the band for The Commitments tour. He could play the guitar, of that there was no doubt. He could hold a harmony too. He was a bright bloke – a Chemistry teacher from Lenham. Though at 28, he was still living with his mother, perhaps telling a story. And he […]

Take A Bow Blinkho

Fans of Ouch! from the very early days will remember the original bass player, Neil Blinkho. Neil was Kev’s sidekick and guaranteed to make him laugh on cue. Tales of Neil’s antics are plentiful but surely his finest hour was the band’s very first video shoot for I Need You More. Cavell had decided on Brighton […]

Ouch Love

Looking back now, it’s easy to say that the nearest we got to being bona fide pop stars was on that first tour to Japan. They were two blissful weeks. A chance to consider the life of a successful pop musician and decide categorically “I could live with that!” Despite having a record deal in […]

Tales Of Mismanagement No.1

Jim Knowler replaced Russel Paye on lead guitar shortly before what turned out to be the highest point of Ouch!’s career – their first tour of Japan. With Cavell struggling financially, they managed to sign a license with Sony Japan to release the first album Life Goes On. But shortly after the band’s return from the […]

Tight As A Gnat’s Chuff

Clive Jenner is arguably the best instrumentalist who has ever played for Ouch! He’s certainly the most successful. Since he got his break with The Freestylers, he’s gone on to play with Lenny Kravitz, Groove Armada, Roots Manuva, Tom McCrae and The Proclaimmers. And, of course, Ouch! He’s also a great bloke. But he does […]

Welcome

It is 13 years since Ouch! played its last gig as a full ensemble. Yet once in a while I am contacted by someone who tells me how much they used to enjoy the band’s music, asks me whether it is possible to buy CDs or enquires about whether we still gig together. I don’t know how they find me - the band has virtually no online presence and we have certainly done no active marketing - but they do. Recently I was contacted by a radio station in Hawaii, who wanted to feature our music on one of their shows and asked about the possibility of an interview.

It set me thinking. The world of music is a very different place to that of 13 years ago. Thanks to the internet, bands no longer need to rely on record companies, publishing companies and, God forbid, (mis)management to find a home for their music. Ouch! could nurture its own online community without even considering the mainstream. It could be a place where we all enjoy the music, the videos, relive the banter, swap stories about the good old days and just see where it takes us.

So here it is. I hope you like it.
